Hard Surface Model of a Sword and Sheath

This is a recent project for a modelling class, the purpose was to build a prop that required hard surface modelling using Maya and Zbrush.

Goals

The idea was to make the iconic Sword "Dragon Slayer" from the manga "Berserk" and make it in Maya and Zbrush. This idea morphed from a minimalist sword into something a bit more original and detailed to fit within the project's grading rubric.

Learnings and Outcomes

I initially started out by modelling the blade out a square and stretching it out. I then made the guard and grip shortly after using similar techniques. I had difficulties exporting the sword out of Maya to Zbrush as the topology of the blade was incorrect leading to awful deformation so i had to retopologize it before exporting again.

ZBrush was then used to add cloth creases to the handle as well as adding any extra details to the swords such as the chain and the Sheath.

The sheath was made in Zbrush by taking the blade of the sword and doing slight modifications. It was first expanded to be bit rounder and then a rim was added to look like a how a typical sword sheath appears.

Adding materials was a final step before rendering. This actually took the longest as adding more than one material to an object is  a complex task of texture painting and hoping the material sticks.

Overall I think the sword turned out great.
